Microvillous Inclusion Disease (MVID) is a rare congenital disorder that affects the intestine's ability to absorb nutrients. There are no known synonyms for this specific medical condition, but some may refer to it colloquially as congenital microvillus atrophy, microvillus inclusion disorder or microvillous atrophy. These terms all refer to the same underlying condition, which is characterized by the absence or reduced numbers of microvilli on the surface of the intestinal cells. Consequently, individuals with this rare condition may experience chronic diarrhea, malnutrition, and growth failure.
