In 1872 a reservation was set apart for the Hidatsa and arikara and the survivors of the Mandan on Missouri and Yellowstone rivers in Dakota and Montana, but in 1886 the reservation was reduced.

They came back through the Bad Lands, above here, and Verendrye records in his journal that near a fort of the arikara Indians he buried a plate of lead, with the arms and inscription of the king.
