The term "petty bourgeois" refers to a social class between the working class and the capitalist class. They are typically small business owners, self-employed individuals or professionals such as doctors and lawyers. There are several synonyms for this term such as the petite bourgeoisie, the lower middle class, the small business class, the middle petty bourgeoisie, the lower tier of the middle class and the petty bourgeoisie strata. These terms are often used interchangeably and describe individuals or families who are economically stable but do not have the same level of wealth and power as the capitalist class.
